  1. Measure your aquarium from the top to bottom edge. We will assume that it is 14 inches. This is also the depth of the aquarium.

 

  1. Then measure your aquarium from the right edge to the left edge. Suppose it is 18 inches.

 

  1. After these two steps, measure the aquarium along the side from the front edge to back edge. Suppose it is 14 inches.

 

  1. Now multiply the three measurements, i.e. 14 x 18 x 14 = 3528 cubic inches. Then multiply the number that you get by 0.00433. This will convert it to gallons from cubic inches, i.e. 3528 x 0.00433. The answer you will get will be the volume of your aquarium. To get a more precise and accurate volume, measure the aquarium’s inside area. This is the most accurate number, as it is the inside area of the aquarium which actually holds the water.

 

  1. However, the volume of water will vary if your aquarium contains gravel and it depends on the size of the aquarium. The larger the size the more water it will hold and vice versa. But the formula for calculating water volume in the aquarium always remains the same, that is V = D x L x W x 0.00433; where, L is the length, W is the width, D is the depth and 0.00433 is a conversion factor that converts the cubic inches to gallons. So now, fill your aquarium with appropriate amount of water. Simply calculate the volume of the aquarium by using the above steps.
