An aquarium is a simulated ecosystem. Therefore, a perfect natural environment must be recreated to keep the fishes healthy and alive. Two things that are important for recreating the natural environment inside an aquarium tanks are sufficient oxygen supply to the fishes and constant flowing water.

Lakes and rivers have a large surface area, due to which the fishes have ample supply of oxygen. But, an aquarium has a very limited surface area.

An aquarium pump serves to simulate the flow of water, which is necessary to circulate the air inside the tank and allows the flow of water towards the filter to remove the contaminants.

An aquarium pump can be internal or external. Pump is very crucial for proper functioning of aquarium. Without the pump, the fishes cannot get enough oxygen to survive.

If you want to buy a new aquarium pump, you must remember some important factors such as noise production, heat generated, resistance offered by the pump, and number of returns.

People usually tend to buy the bigger and the most powerful pumps. This is a wrong practice. The size of the aquarium must be kept in mind while purchasing the pump. Big aquarium pumps generate large amounts of heat. A significant rise in the temperature of water can damage the delicate ecosystem of the aquarium.

Also, you should not buy a pump that is small and inefficient to pump enough water. You may have to purchase an additional pump to meet the requirement. The volume of water contained in the tank is a critical factor in deciding the type of pump to be used.

In a closed system, a powerful aquarium pump should be installed, because greater pressure is needed. In such a system, the water needs to be filtered through module or canister filters. A closed system type aquarium pump requires more turnovers as compared to a pump of an open system. In an open system, the aquarium pump is of dry or wet type.

The intake or return of the aquarium pump should not be altered. A lowered intake could lead to overheating of the pump. The resistance produced by the pump causes rise in temperature. This can adversely affect the life of the pump.

It is imperative that you check the pump regularly and maintain it properly. Any part of the pump that gives problems should be replaced. It is advisable to keep an extra aquarium pump. In case of an emergency, you can put it to use immediately.
